In 2010, Wegman started purchasing reusable plastic bags from China. However, upon testing the found out that the reusable bags had a high level of lead, which was a problem. The levels were also 7 to 8 higher than what USA FDA and EPA regulation allowed at the time.

Lead is the most important toxic heavy element in the environment. It is abundantly distributed in the world, despite its identification as a dangerous environmental chemical (Mahaffay, 1990a).

Lead is a highly poisonous metal that can affect almost every organ in the human body. Out of all the organs, it tends to have a severe effect on the nervous system, which encompasses the most crucial organs in the human body.

Long term exposure to adults can result in decreased cognitive performance while exposure in younger population may lead to behavioral problems, learning deficits and lowered IQ (Rubin & Strayer, 2008)
