As a director, I must ensure that staff is supported and clients receive the best addiction treatment services using a therapeutic model that aligns with organizational values and diverse needs. The Minnesota Model offers a comprehensive, holistic approach to addiction treatment that emphasizes addiction as a disease and integrates physical, psychological, and spiritual care (Fisher & Harrison, 2018). I believe this model best serves clients, as it aligns with diverse cultural backgrounds and values. It believes that clients can transform their attitudes and beliefs towards addiction, fostering a sense of hope with clients and compassion among staff. It also acknowledges the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects to understand the client's values and beliefs. This facilitates a more meaningful and supportive relationship among staff and clients, aligning with the NASW Code of Ethics that emphasizes the importance of human relationships. Additionally, this model understands that the disease is not curable, but through abstinence and personal growth, clients and staff understand recovery is a life journey. The Minnesota model also emphasizes the crucial role of social support outside of professional help. This particularly involves family and community utilizing education to better understand the recovery process. The use of AA and NA would help clients relate to one another and understand different perspectives, and aid in the aftercare of clients. Additionally, staff members would be supported as well using a multifaceted team including doctors, therapists, counselors, etc., promoting a collaborative approach. Although a multifaceted team can be controversial, staff must receive adequate training to be competent with the client's needs. This model understands the importance of long-term sobriety and reducing relapse rates to support clients with AOD use.
