HUM 3321 Essay 2 Fall 2023 Please answer ONE question from one of the following prompts in 500-750 words. Please see the essay guidelines in the Module as well. You must indicate what essay prompt you are answering by the number (don't copy the question). Please submit it through Turnitin as a .doc or .docx document (do not use RTF, Pages etc.) and bring a hard copy to class. You must include citations, a Works Cited page, and be sure to give the author credit for his/her ideas, not just his/her statements. For example: "Althusser states that the ruling class is kept in power through the use of ISAs and the RSA (34-35)." You can't say the "ISA and RSA keep the ruling class in power". This is not YOUR concept, but Althusser's. After a quote you need to cite; i.e.: "Nations are both limited and sovereign" (Anderson 143). You may also use the Belton as desired. Be sure to answer the question and include all authors' works as required. You must give details from two movies supporting your argument and quote or paraphrase the bolded authors (giving credit - citing). Outside articles are NOT allowed. 1) Andre defines a stereotype as a "conventional, formulaic, and usually oversimplified conception, opinion, or belief; a person, group, event, or issue considered to typify or confirm to an unvarying pattern" (50). Rowe describes citizenship as often understood as a "spatial formation" in which "whiteness is synonymous with freedom." Because of this, whites are able to move about freely, while others are marked as "criminal," or "detained, exploited, and abused." Discussing two films (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, The Harder They Fall, and/or McFarland USA), discuss how stereotypes work to otherize non-hegemonic groups according to race, limiting their space and freedom. How are the characters in the film criminalized, detained, exploited or abused? How are these stereotypes used to create oversimplified images or to create rigid understandings of them? Do harmful impacts result, or is the film endeavoring to present them in a more positive light? Use evidence for or against your statements within the films. 2.) Morris describes the position of white normativity as one that creates "white male" as the standard and most human, compared to others. This accounts for attitudes of both positive and negative racial stereotypes, as well as the transparency that occurs when white normativity allows white people to not be aware of these standards. McIntosh states that "whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege", Combining these two concepts, the concepts of race and cultural norms are delineated by ideological forces involved in inclusion and exclusion. The symbols and rhetoric employed carry power because they privilege certain groups and give meaning and substance to things that can only be imagined. Discussing two films (Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, The Harder They Fall, and/or Mcfarland USA) how are the concepts of race and privilege represented? Do non-whites face social gravity, while whites enjoy privilege? How are the non-white characters seen as somehow less human? Provide specific examples. Does Hollywood cater to white sensibilities?
