write the introduction section:

*Potential structure of Intro - but only work in progress, not happy with it yet*

Target journal: JPSP

  1. STEM environment with masculine defaults and masculine culture is harder for women to navigate. Make sure define MD well, say it is a bit fuzzy. Women underrepresented, many leave early in their careers.
  2. One aspect of masculine defaults as described by Cheryan: Use of dominance to lead (dominance one of two prominent routes to gain influence)
    1. Inclusive culture could reduce dominance. Define Inclusive Culture culture (anticipate critique - same effects for women and men, so is it really the inclusiveness of culture?).
    2. Or alternative: increase dominance because less fear of backlash. But dominance well-known to bring backlash against women. Bring examples of backlash.
  3. Research Question: Can an inclusive culture reshape how people lead, thereby help women advance?
  4. Talk about how inclusive culture was found to benefit women in STEM: Less social identity threat, more respectful interactions with male colleagues, etc.
  5. [Preview of Research] Emphasize why inclusive culture may also benefit women: Perception of less masculine defaults, less constrained career aspirations, less dominance, more ethical-relational leadership behaviors.
