EDITORIAL | Line Between Jokes and Slanders The Korean Pop phenomena continues to spread its ever-growing popularity all over the world. One of the biggest names that continue to uphold its influence is the Bangtan Boys or famously called, BTS. With a growing fanbase, however, it is inevitable that there will be a side who feels a different type of way towards the phenomena. This is exemplified when on June 6, the term "BTS Biot" trended on Twitter, which sparked an uproar in the said social media site. Since recently becoming a common phrase that has been freely stated in different social platforms, it topped the "trending topics" of Twitter when a viral photoshoot of students was posted, posing for their yearbook photos while holding placards with the phrase written on it. Displeased by this, fans of the boy group ARMYS expressed their disappointment and asked for accountability, seeing as the trend allows individuals to promote hate and prejudice against the LGBTQ+ community. Unfortunately, the word "bayot" or "gay" is still used in a negative and derogatory manner in many parts of society. Ignoring this stigma permits name-calling and the use of bayot as a derogatory statement, not only on social media but also in real-life circumstances. Moreover, this whole debacle is happening during Pride Month, a month dedicated to celebrating the efforts of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) people to achieve equal justice and opportunity. Over the course of the years, ARMYS have unfortunately garnered a tarnished reputation as some have exhibited immature behavior online. With that, the addition of "biot" everytime BTS is mentioned is viewed as a bait to trigger those fans and not a direct slander against the boy group themselves. However, what these individuals, who continue to justify the trend, fail to realize is that the turmoil was the first place. It is more on how the trend is basically a never about the boys and their public image blatant display of internalized homophobia, and how that completely undermines the long, withstanding fight that the LGBTQ+ community and its allies continue to strive for up to this day.
