What Is a Data Warehouse?

In simple terms, a data warehouse (DW) is a pool o f data produced to support decision making; it is also a repository of current and historical data of potential interest to managers throughout the organization. Data are usually structured to be available in a form ready for analytical processing activities (i.e., online analytical processing [OLAP], data mining, querying, reporting, and other decision support applications). A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, nonvolatile collection of data in support of managements decision-making process.

data mining is a term used to describe discovering or mining knowledge

from large amounts of data. Technically speaking, data mining is a process that uses statistical, mathematical, and artificial intelligence techniques to extract and identify useful information and subsequent knowledge (or patterns) from large sets o f data.

The following are the major characteristics and objectives o f data mining:

Data are often buried deep within very large databases, which sometimes contain data from several years. In many cases, the data are cleansed and consolidated into a data warehouse. Data may be presented in a variety of formats (see Technology Insights 5.1 for a brief taxonomy o f data).
