Writing Situation:

A few weeks ago, you successfully published an open letter on The Local, an award$-$winning independent magazine known for being $$unabashedly Toronto, reporting from corners of the city that are too often ignored or misunderstood.$$

Due to popular demand and growing interest, The Local wants to extend the issue about the use of technology. They have invited students enrolled in a Toronto college to create a social media campaign featuring diverse perspectives about a current social problem related to technology so that readers walk away with a more nuanced understanding of the topic.

You have a choice of where you would like to conduct your campaign: Instagram or LinkedIn.

In your posts $($LinkedIn or Instagram$)$ you will:

Create three posts

Each post should include an image with a pull quote $($built using Canva for Education $-$ free$)$

Each post should include a $250$ to $300-$word caption

Each caption will recommend a unique, reputable source and make the point that the problem is pressing and matters to the community

Each caption will provide important details about the source to motivate your readers to learn more

Each caption will include audience engagement pieces

Each caption will have alt$-$text at the end

Together, all three posts will illustrate a nuanced picture of the problem

Use this template to see the structure outlined in class. Social media conventions and practice using Canva will be done in class. Attendance is critical for success. If you miss class, it is not my responsibility to teach you these strategies or technologies over email.

For the Social Media Post Assignment $(20\%),$ you have a choice:

Option One:

Use the template provided $($Instagram template OR LinkedIn template$)$ to create three $250$ to $300-$word social media posts that inform readers of three different sources that each represent a different perspective on the same specific problem you researched and wrote about in your Open Letter.

These three sources must be different from the sources you used in your Open Letter.

Use the source in each post to make the point that this problem is pressing and matters to the GTA community.

It is your job to recommend these sources to your readers and motivate your audience to read the sources you chose.

Your sources must be reputable and academic $($i$.$e$.$ articles, podcast episodes, documentaries$).$

Do not simply link to another social media post.

OR Option Two:

Use the template provided $($Instagram template OR LinkedIn template$)$ to create three $250$ to $300-$word social media posts that inform readers of three different sources that each represent a different perspective on a current social problem related to technology that piques your interest.

Be specific about the problem you've selected $($i$.$e$.$ you can't just write about "technology and society" in a generic way$).$

Use the source in each post to make the point that this problem is pressing and matters to the GTA community.

It is your job to recommend these sources to your readers and motivate your audience to read the sources you chose.

Your sources must be reputable and academic $($i$.$e$.$ articles, podcast episodes, documentaries$).$

Do not simply link to another social media post.

Apply what we learned in class about the conventions of a social media post. Consult the assignment rubric to ensure you are creating posts the meet the grading criteria.
