Writing Style & Formatting
1. You must use this assignment instruction file to complete each weekly assignment. DO NOT delete the instructions.
2. All written work (assignments, paper, presentation slides, etc.) should follow the guideline of APA 7 to properly credit any external sources of information used in the work. Failing to do so is considered plagiarism and violation of academic integrity.
3. Use the textbook to define a concept with a proper citation each time you introduce it in your answers.
4. Text should always use double-spacing, Times New Roman, 12 point font, and 1 inch margin on all sides.
5. All written work must be submitted in either Word (.docx) or PDF format. Mac documents (e.g.,.page) and documents in any other formats cannot be opened by Brightspace and the professors computer, therefore, they will not be graded and receive a zero. Students can freely download Office 365(Word, PPT, etc.) from USM IT Service website.
Purpose of this assignment
To help students understand the Job Characteristics Model (JCM). Jobs with different features tend to be inherently satisfying to different degrees. Students need to understand how the features included in JCM influence their evaluations of the extent to which some jobs are satisfying.
Assignment: Satisfaction with the work itself across jobs.
1. Use the OB Assessments for Chapter 4 to calculate the Satisfaction Potential Score (SPS) for the following jobs. Do not just provide the end SPS score for each job. Rather, spell out the calculation process using your ratings of the ten items and the formula as illustrated in the picture below. You do not need to explain your rating on each of the 10 items in the picture.
a) A third-grade public school teacher.
b) A standup comedian.
c) A computer programmer whose job is to replace 22 with 2022 in thousands of lines of computer code. Make sure you rate the task, NOT computer programmer in general.
d) A president of the United States.
e) Your most recent job, specify the job (if you dont have any work experience, consider a job you know reasonably well).
2. What does the level of an SPS score indicate exactly (see textbook)?
3. In the formula, the weights of each scale item in Autonomy and Feedback are how many times of the weights of each scale item in Variety, Identity, and Significance?
4. Given the answer to Q3, if you want to redesign a job to make it more inherently satisfying (i.e., increase the jobs SPS score), what might be the most effective changes you could potentially make to the job? Provide a few broad suggestions.
