You are a developmental service professional supporting Janice, a 32-year-old woman with a mild intellectual disability living
Question:
You are a developmental service professional supporting Janice, a 32-year-old woman with a mild intellectual disability living in supported independent living(SIL). She lives by herself in her own apartment and receives 6 - 8 hours of support a week from the agency you work for. She works part-time at a local fast-food restaurant. Janice has been dating her boyfriend Phil on and off for about a year. They met at a coffee shop that they both visit regularly. As far as you know, Phil is not diagnosed with a developmental disability. You are visiting Janice in her apartment one afternoon and Janice is quieter than usual and then starts to cry. She tells you that she and Phil got into an argument the night before and he was yelling and calling her names. Janice tells you that she loves Phil but that they argue often. She says that Phil never hits or hurts her. As you are talking, you notice a greenish/yellow bruise on Janice's upper right arm and ask her about it (See photo below). She reports to you that she was carrying boxes of work a week ago and the walk-in freezer door closed on her arm.
At this point, what steps will you take to support Janice? Explain why you would take these steps.
