Question: You are to consider the potential circular slip surface, being the arc subtended by the angle and centred at point C marked in Fig .

You are to consider the potential circular slip surface, being the arc subtended by the angle
and centred at point C marked in Fig.2.1. Perform a slope stability analysis using the Swedish (or
Fellenius) method to determine the factor of safety (FS) for the slope (for the considered failure
mode). You are required to consider a minimum of 6 slices. Note that when calculating your FS,
you are to use an accurate approximation of the area of each slice based on its geometry. You are
required to provide at least the following:
1. A diagram drawn to scale that at a minimum illustrates your failure surface, the slices used
in the analysis, and any dimensions you feel relevant to your analysis/working out.
2. A table summarising the stability analysis performed for each slice (to be included in the
summary of results). It is recommended you use Excel to perform your analysis. In your ap-
pendix, please include an explanation of your calculation process/equations used to obtain
the results in each column - this should include an example calculation for 1 of the slices.
3. Your calculated factor of safety and the equation used to determine it.
4. Compare your FS with that contained in the geotechnical report (p37, F S =2.477). Give 2
reasons why your FS might differ from that in the report (max 30 words).
