Participation is mandatory and will count towards the course grade. You are expected to provide a substantial comment of several well-written paragraphs in each session and a similar comment or reflection in reply to at least two other students' contribution. Statements such as "I agree" or "good post" will not count as a reply.
(1) Hello Everyone,
11. Explain why a vector cannot have a component greater than its own magnitude.
A magnitude is typically a sum of two or more components. The magnitude being two or more components we cannot have them being greater than the magnitude. If one were to be greater than the magnitude, then one would cancel out the other. In two dimensional systems, vectors can be broken into x and y components. When the value of the components is known, then the magnitude of the vector can be found. On the other hand, if the magnitude and direction of a vector is known then we can find the components of the vector.
(2) Greetings Class,
The question I choose for this week's discussion
18. A basketball player dribbling down the court usually keeps his eyes fixed on the players around him. He is moving fast. Why doesn't he need to keep his eyes on the ball?
A player moves down the court while applying the same horizontal velocity to the ball. The player's hand is actually pushing the ball horizontally while yet appearing to be vertically bouncing it at the same speed as the player. The player may concentrate on their teammates and opponents because the ball has no horizontal velocity of its own and depends entirely on them. The ball will move wherever the player pushes it with its hand because the ground directly beneath the player is immobile. The only thing the player needs to be concerned about is colliding with the ball as the basketball is heading upward depending on the angle at which the player pressed the ball against the ground.
