- You have just been promoted to Senior VP of Energy and Investments at the South Texas Project (STP) Nuclear Operating Company and the board of directors would like you to explain your vision for the next 10 years. You is a need for 200 MWe (electric) of electricity needed annually; up to 1 GWe could be provided by renewables and natural gas, if needed, but the company would like to get more nuclear power. Starting in 2032, the need will grow to 400 MWe/year. There are also pressing needs on the coastal cities for clean water. (150 MWt/year), as the Colorado River on this side of the Rockies might start drying up too. There are also dozens industries in Austin and Houston that are growing concerned with the reliability of electricity in Texas and are thinking of building microgrids (20 MWe), which would reduce the electricity needs for the state, but they might like to partner with STPNOC to build and operate them. You've also heard that much of the uranium in the US comes from Russia, but we're trying to add more enrichment capability so you're nervous about supply. While people near STP are very happy with the plant and perfor mance, you're also concerned some places might not want a reactor nearby: 1. Business Design (a) Given what you've learned, what would you propose for a 10-year plan and why? (b) List out what you believe to be the key requirements (must haves) and preferences (c) How would you weight the preferences compared to the requirements and one-another? (d) List out what you believe to be the key constraints (e) How would you compare different reactor designs to your require- ments/constraints? (f) How much do you believe the cost and time estimates that you hear from these reactor design companies? (g) What type of reactor(s) would you propose to build and why? 2. Risk Analysis for the first operating reactor (a) What would you imagine the worst possible accident could be at that very first reactor you build? (b) Discuss the defense-in-depth components that are used to prevent such a catastrophic accident? (c) How would you compare the risk (consequence times probability) of choosing all renewable +gas to your strategy? What you do think are the key "consequences" and the probabilities of them occurring? - You have just been promoted to Senior VP of Energy and Investments at the South Texas Project (STP) Nuclear Operating Company and the board of directors would like you to explain your vision for the next 10 years.
