You must complete steps 1 to 3 for this

You must complete steps 1 to 3 for this assignment. Be sure to carefully read the information that is provided for each step. If you have any questions about this assignment, contact your instructor as soon as possible.

STEP 1 There are several components to this first step. Be sure to carefully read the information.

  1. Make a cultural profile of yourself based on the 8 cultural value orientations discussed in Chapter 6 (figure 6.2) of your textbook.

NOTE: Your personal culture is a reflection of how you perceive the world around you and may not necessarily reflect a textbook description of your home country's culture.

  1. In the table below, indicate the value for each parameter by selecting the appropriate number from the scale of choices provided (i.e., from 1 to 5). Each parameter will reflect your value score from 1 to 5 for each dimension.
  2. Discuss your score for each value orientation in the body of your paper. Why did you give yourself this score?

NOTE: Citations are not necessary when discussing your own views about your cultural profile. You will use the information about your personal profile in Step 2 when you will make a comparison between the differences between your own culture and another culture.

STEP 2 There are several components to this second step. Be sure to carefully read the information.

  1. Make a comparison of the differences between your own cultural profile and that of another culture. Note: You can select any country except Japan and the Netherlands.
  2. Select a country where you know some of its inhabitants and/or where you may wish to do business someday.
  3. You may need to research and use further documentation in addition to your textbook about the country.
  4. Using the table provided below:
  • Transfer your personal cultural profile scores from step 1 to this table.
  • Provide scores for the country you have chosen based on your research. You will discuss how you derived the scores by providing supporting information from reference materials.

SUGGESTION: You may wish to use Geert-Hofstede.com's Country Comparison as a guide for scoring. Note that there are similarities in the descriptions of the 8 value orientations and Geert Hofstede's 6 Dimensions.

  • Resave the table provided below. You will use the information in this table in order to complete Part 2 which follows.

Instructions: Part 2

  1. Compare the differences between your own cultural profile and your country's cultural profile.
  2. Using the table, discuss and provide responses to the questions below in the body of your analytical paper:
  • What are the similarities and differences in value orientations?
  • What, in your view, are the critical issues when representatives of the two cultures profiled work together?

NOTE: You will use this information in Step 3 when you will determine the management strategies needed to make a success of your job in the country chosen.

STEP 3: There are several components to this third step. Be sure to carefully read the information.

  1. Determine the management strategies needed to make a success of your job in the country chosen.
  2. Think about and share how you can adapt in order to operate in the business environment of the chosen country.
  3. Take into account individual, national, and professional cultural differences in your analysis.

To help you with your analysis:

Re-read Concept 6.1: Management Tasks and Cultural Values in Chapter 6 of your textbook.

Examine the examples in Understanding Cross-Cultural Management found on pages 168-172 of your textbook.

  1. Describe how your chosen country differs from YOUR cultural values for each management task:
  • Planning
  • Organizing
  • Staffing
  • Directing
  • Controlling.

  1. Suggest a management strategy to address each of the differences in YOUR cultural values. You only need to address this generally and only where there are cultural differences, i.e.: If your style of control is the same as the country researched you shouldn't have to make a change.
