Report of Officer Oberg

On Oct. 5, 2013 at approx. 6:23pm Officer Oberg was on patrol when he received a call to respond to a armed robbery at the Seven Eleven Located on Route 27 and Polk Road. The officer arrived and met the store clerk Jane Afraid. She told the officer that she had been robbed at gun point. Upon questioning by the officer she stated that a single white male in his 20's, brown hair, unknown eyes, med build and med height had entered the store. He was wearing a light colored shirt - she was not sure of the color. He had dark colored shorts and was wearing a baseball cap - she was not sure if there was anything on the cap. He had sunglasses which prevented her from seeing his eyes. He asked to buy a quick pick lottery ticket and as she turned process his request, the suspect pulled out a gun, pointed it at her and demanded the money from the cash drawer. She could not describe the gun, only that it was big. She stated she was terrified and shaking. She stated that she gave him all the money in the cash register. He told her not to call the police and he fled out the parking lot. She waited, and then locked the door as she had been trained and called the police. She did not know if he left in a car.

The officer radioed the description to the other responding units to search the area. The manager of the store arrived and identified himself as Tom Smith. He retrieved the store video of the event. The officer viewed the video which was of poor quality. The video did confirm that there was only one suspect. However the color of the video was poor making it difficult to discern the description of the suspect. The suspect appeared to be wearing a NY Yankees Baseball Cap. He had sunglasses and pointed what appeared to be a pistol of unknown make at the clerk. He had a light blue shirt and dark shorts. He stuffed the money into his left front pocket as he held the gun in his right hand. The suspect's height was in the 5-7" to the 5-10" range on height tape by the door. The suspect was hunched as he ran out the door making it difficult to determine the height using the tape posted on the door. One of the outside cameras caught a bluish colored Toyota Camry leaving the parking lot within 20 seconds of the suspect leaving the store. Only one occupant was visible in the car. The camera did not show the plate of the car. This information was radioed to dispatch for a BOLO. The video tape was taken by the officer as evidence and later tagged and signed into the evidence locker. The officer recommends that it be sent for enhancement for review by detectives.

Officers checking the area, stopped in at local stores and Lieutenant Connolly located a video surveillance tape of the highway from the Dunkin Doughnuts next door to the store. That tape was also seized as evidence, tagged and turned over to Detective Sgt. Shea. She was able to use the Department's video enhancement equipment to enlarge the pixels for better resolution and obtain a partial plate on the Toyota Camry for a FL Plate from Polk County of 8??7? Officer Oberg, Lt Connolly, and Sgt. Shea all agreed the Camry appeared to be a 2004-2009 model. Lieutenant Connolly stated he used to drive a 2006 and it looked similar to the car he used to own.

Detective Sgt. Shea then ran the plate through the FL State Department of Motor Vehicles data base and came up with two matches for a light blue Toyota Camry registered in Polk County with the partial FL plate 8??7? Detective Shea then pulled up the driver's FL license photos and found that the two owners matched the description given by the clerk and from viewing the store's video surveillance system. Both were white males, mid 20's, brown hair, med build. The first owner is John Doe, 160 lbs, 5-8, age 23. Owner two is Joe Slick, 174lbs, 5-9, age 22. Both were the registered owners of a Toyota Camry that was observed in the video leaving the scene of the armed robbery.
