SCENARIO: You are the team leader for the front desk at RGV orthopedic specialists. Over the last three months, you have noticed that the front desk check$-$in process is taking longer than usual. This orthopedic practice is a high$-$volume practice with seven physicians and $3$ Physicians Assistants, and the providers see about $200$ patients a day. The patient check$-$in process should take $7$ minutes or less, but the process averages $10$ minutes. The patient check$-$in process creates a patient backup at the registration desk, impacting the patient$$s time to see the provider. Patients and their families have expressed concerns about seeing their provider on time, and there is also information on the patient satisfaction survey about the check$-$in issues.

There are three registration clerks, a front desk supervisor, a practice manager, an insurance specialist, and a referral coordinator working at the front desk.

$1.$ Identify the problem or opportunity based on the information provided.

$2.$ Map out the steps in the patient check$-$in process; you must identify at least six steps in the patient check$-$in process. It is ideal to have $6-10$ steps in this process.

$3.$ Write an opportunity statement based on the beginning and ending boundaries of the steps listed above.
