Task
Scenario
- This Iowa State Cyclone t-shirt is sourced by T-Shirt Co. in Chino, CA to provide to retailers for end consumer purchase. For example, T-Shirt Co. supplies t-shirts for various universities around the country to both Amazon and Target. T-Shirt Co. sells full boxes of 24 t-shirts to Amazon and Target for them to sell to their customers.
- T-Shirt Co. sources the finished t-shirt from a supplier in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Once the supplier fills the order from T-Shirt Co, the shipment travels to Chattogram, Bangladesh to be loaded onto a container ship for ocean travel to the United States. Many customers have T-Shirt Co. control the international shipping process and allow T-Shirt Co. to process shipments. In this scenario, T-Shirt Co. receives multiple ocean containers of t-shirts at the Port of Long Beach in California, and then has those t-shirts transported to its warehouse in Chino, CA.
- Specifically, Amazon has this Iowa State t-shirt for sale at $24.99. Amazon sends an individual t-shirt from its facility after receiving an order. The t-shirt leaves an Amazon Fulfillment Center located in Kansas City, MO by an Amazon Truck and then is delivered to your address in Ames after stopping in an Amazon Sortation Center located in Ankeny, IA where the shirt is loaded for delivery on an Amazon Sprinter Van. Amazon receives full boxes of t-shirts from the T-Shirt Co. at its Kansas City, MO Fulfillment Center through parcel shipments like those sent through and delivered by UPS.
- Target has this same shirt for $27.99 and it is available at the Target store in Ames for purchase. You would physically need to go to Target to get the t-shirt. Assume the Ames Target receives a box of the shirts from Targets Distribution Center in Cedar Falls, IA. Target purchases a container of t-shirts at a time from T-Shirt Co. and picks up the container itself by truck from Chino, CA. Target then delivers the container to its import re-distribution center in Carson, CA. From there, the Iowa State t-shirts are sorted and sent with hundreds of other cartons on a 53-foot trailer transported by an asset-based truckload (TL) carrier. This TL carrier delivers the trailer to the Target Distribution Center in Cedar Falls, IA.
