Question:
Your supervisor has assigned you to a patient transportation project from the Department of Radiology.
Patients in wheelchairs and beds need to be transported between the emergency department (ED) and the imaging suites for radiology studies. Currently,ED nursestransport patientsto the imaging suites, and then after the procedure,Radiology technicianstransport the patientsback to the ED. The ED nurses do not think it should be their responsibility to transport patients to the imaging suites because of their busy schedule. However, Radiology technicians believe it unsafe for them to transport critically ill patients. Although there are instances where patient transit times have been significantly delayed due to process-related and staffing shortage challenges, adverse patient event(s), injuries, etc., have not been experienced/documented to date.
The Radiology administrator has asked you to evaluate the situation and provide recommendations so that the ED nurses assume responsibility for transporting all ED patients to and from the imaging suites.
