Your task for Assignment 1 is to provide an Operational Definition for the following constructs (note- you are not expected to actually collect any of this data):

memory capacity

sleepiness

study efficiency

affection

honesty

1. State the construct you have chosen

2. Provide a detailed and complete operational definition for your construct. This includes:

A) Complete inclusion of all necessary details (2 points)

B) Criteria for excluding acts or behaviors (i.e., these behaviors count as a laugh, but these behaviors do not) (2 points)

C) Clarity of wording (2 points)

D) Relevancy- Did you actually come up with a good measure? (2 points)

E) Describing the units of measurement that are ultimately collected (e.g., seconds, total yawns in 15 minutes, number of records sold worldwide, % of student body attending an event etc.) (2 points)

REMEMBER: An operational definition describes a procedure for how to measure something. It is NOT a proposal for designing a full-blown experiment. Your only task with this assignment is to describe how to measure a construct empirically. Each operational definition must include your own original ideas and may not include previously created surveys, any kind of Likert scale (e.g., participants rate on a scale of 1-5) or self-report. Your measurement must be some form of behavioral or physiological assessment.
