Case Study SMART Inspector is a small but successful business owned by Xavier Hardy who addresses issues experienced by smart home owners when people sell their homes and forget to reset their smart systems. The business currently produces a profit of $200,00 per year. New owners find themselves tied to the previous owners smart system settings that do not align with their lifestyles. Some of the problems experienced by the new owners range from lights turning on by themselves at different times of the day, curtains closing by themselves when they are not supposed to and vacuum cleaners cleaning by themselves at inappropriate times amongst others. It usually takes a long time for new home owners to understand the home automation system that was being used previously. New owners have to then try to reset the previous system without knowing the previous owners passwords and then reprogram the system to meet their needs. Xavier Hardy started his business by visiting these smart homes to reset the systems and reprogram them to meet the needs of the new home owners. After a year and with more experience under his belt, Xavier started to work remotely. He would first obtain some basic information from the owners about the IoT devices that are installed in their home. He would then post out a USB stick that the owners can plug into their system and he would be able manage everything else remotely from his office. With the ongoing pandemic in recent times, there is a lot of property changing hands and all of a sudden, Xavier Hardy is faced with a booming business but no resources for expansion. As part of his vision for expansion, Xavier Hardy has developed a USB stick alternative which is a USB stick with a 5G modem in one called the ProtonStick. Xavier charges his clients to send out the tool and when they plug it into their system, it automatically resets their system and he can immediately start reprogramming their system. Xavier would also offer an ongoing service so that if the clients needs change, they can contact him and he can fix things for them. For Xaviers expansion plans to come to fruition, he would need a marketing website and his existing software adapted so that instead of catering for just one person, it can be used in a small call centre of programmers. Xavier would like to employ a number of programmers and have then respond to the clients changing needs through the ProtonStick. Xavier would like to be making an additional $100,000 in profit within 12 months. Before costs and taxes, SMART Inspectors current revenue is $250,000. It is anticipated that will rise quickly to $400,000 with both the marketing website and the ProtonStick and $300,000 with the ProtonStick alone.

Xavier received two quotes with a completion time frame of 6 months:

$120,000 with the backend programming for the ProtonSticks and the development of a full marketing website. $101,000 with the backend programming for the ProtonSticks and the development of a static website. Xavier is hoping to increase his profits to $300,000 per year once this is completed. He is also considering the option of a static website, instead of a full marketing website due to lower costs but that would be the bare minimum option.
