The introduction of technologies such as fax machines, e-mail, and the Internet into the workplace has greatly increased the possibility of employees using company property for personal use. It is a new spin on the old nuisance of employees making personal phone calls at work—but with greatly magnified consequences. The use of technologies by employees ranges from occasional online shopping ventures to hours spent surfing the Internet to the use of a company computer to run a personal business. Should excessive Internet use be grounds for dismissal? Under what circumstances? Other than to prevent lost productivity, why would an employer want to control an employee’s Internet use?
