Vermeulen booked a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru through Worldwide Holidays travel agency in Florida. Worldwide received a commission from the Peruvian tour agency Chasquitur, when in Peru, the driver of a Chasquitur van rear-ended another vehicle and Vermeulen was injured.
