Research studies support the fact that the prevalence of obesity has progressively risen for 30 years. An increase in the body mass index (BMI), has been noticed in the United State since early 1970s, and mostly among children and adolescent population. Diseases like Type II Diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Osteoarthritis, types of cancer, Major Depressive disorder, and low self-esteem, could all be related to obesity. Since morbidity is interrelated to obesity, it has become a health priority to educate the population about measures to avoid it. Studies on the leading causes of obesity have been highly debated. Some of the contributing factors in the literatures are decreased physical activities, environmental factors like pollutants, change in the gut microbiota and over-nutrition. However, the overconsumption of energy and the quality of foods are major factors for obesity. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role played by nutrition in obesity epidemic.

Numerous health issues are linked to obesity, including osteoarthritis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, among others. Unless we are able to counteract obesity and its comorbidities, healthcare will be faced with huge financial burdens.
