When people buy things, they have a number of statutory rights. A basic right is that the product should be of adequate quality and fit for the purpose intended. When customers think these rights have been infringed, they might contact their local government's trading standards service. Mary Lomamanu has been working in Auckland as a consumer advice officer for the past 14 months, where her job is to advise people who have complaints against traders. She listens to the complaints, assesses the problem and then takes the follow-up action she thinks is needed.
