Nissan and Toyota were number 1 and 2 in a recent annual study of labor productivity in the auto industry. Labor represents about 15% of the total cost to make a vehicle. Since Nissan required only about 28.5 labor hours per vehicle, it saves about $300 to $450 in labor costs to build a car relative to Ford. Why might Nissan production require significantly fewer labor hours?
