After you have reviewed the articles and have an understanding of how the laws affect on-line realities, discuss how these topics are related to the Canadian context. Examine the issue of preserving our fundamental right to freedom of speech (aside from those protections that are provided for in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
Compose an essay, using a short essay format exploring the current protections provided. The following questions are intended to help you get started in your exploration of this issue.
Are the current protections sufficient? If so, provide justification. If not, how should they be improved? Have they been evolved to reflect our new digital reality?
A number of articles provide very different perspectives and scenarios wherein freedoms are being questions and/or overridden for the sake of another purpose (e.g. stopping terrorism, economic development and solving a criminal case. What role does the protection of a "greater good" play in determining whether or not freedom of speech and privacy should be protected?
The scope of the articles examine more public venues such as social media sites, as well as deal with the use of technology in an individual's home. What impact should an expectation of privacy have on the access to, and release of information? For cloud services, such as the Amazon Echo case, is there a reasonable expectation of privacy.
