Interview a working technical communicator, asking about a problem, issue, or challenge he or she has encountered while producing a report, developing a website, testing the usability of documentation, designing a new interface, and so forth. Listen carefully to the story. Take detailed notes-perhaps even audiorecord the interview. Make sure to ask questions about the purpose of the document and the process by which it was created. Ask the technical communicator to describe the problem (or problems) involved in the task, and how those problems were addressed or solved. How do differing views of writing create issues or miscommunication? Do the differing views enable technical communicators to resolve problems?
