In justifying research into small molecule catalysts for producing NH₃ from N₂, it is sometimes stated that nitrogenase is an ‘efficient’ enzyme: how true is this statement? Comment critically on the argument that ‘knowing the 3D structure of nitrogenase has not enlightened us as to its mechanism of action and discuss how this view might be valid more generally for enzymes for which a structure is known.
