Question:

What additional information would have made it easier for you to develop a new organization design for Unipro?

Form small groups of three or four students each. Assume that your group is the board of directors of a large firm, Unipro Incorporated, which for many years followed a single-product strategy. It manufactured small jet aircraft and sold them worldwide. Its products are market leaders in North America, Asia, and Europe and also sell well in South America and Africa. Because of the single-product strategy, Unipro set up a global functional organization design, which it still uses.
The board has been concerned about the firm’s dependence on a single product, so several years ago it decided to diversify the firm. Over four years the firm has bought several other businesses:
General Chemical (based in England; almost 90 percent of its revenues come from Europe)
Total Software (based in Canada; most of its revenues come from North America and Europe)
Pleasure Park (an amusement park in Japan)
Fundamental Foods (a large food-processing firm with strong operations in the United States, Europe, and Japan)
Now that Unipro’s diversification strategy has been fully implemented, the board (your group) sees that it needs to change the firm’s organization design to better fit the new business mix. Based solely on the information you have, sketch a new organization design for the firm.
When you are finished, draw your organization design on the blackboard.
Be prepared to defend your design.
