A bar (0.5 mathrm{~m}) long has (2 mathrm{~cm}^{2}) area of cross-section for (0.4 mathrm{~m}) of its length

Question:

A bar \(0.5 \mathrm{~m}\) long has \(2 \mathrm{~cm}^{2}\) area of cross-section for \(0.4 \mathrm{~m}\) of its length and \(1 \mathrm{~cm}^{2}\) for the remaining length. A load of \(40 \mathrm{kN}\) falls on the collar provided at the lower end of the bar, the other end being fixed, from a height of \(5 \mathrm{~cm}\). Find the maximum stress induced in the bar. \(E\) \(=200 \mathrm{GPa}\).
