Question:

At some time in your life you may have gone to a doctor and had some sort of medical diagnostic test done like for strep throat or tuberculosis. These diagnostic tests can be related to hypothesis testing. They aim to indicate whether or not the patient has a particular disease. But the tests are not infallible, so errors can be made. The null hypothesis can be regarded as the patient being healthy. The alternative hypothesis can be regarded as the patient having the disease.

a. In this scenario, describe what it means if the null hypothesis is rejected when, in fact, it is true. Also indicate a potential consequence of this type of decision error.

b. In this scenario, describe what it means if the null hypothesis is not rejected when, in fact, it is false. Also indicate a potential consequence of this type of decision error.

c. Which type of error, the false positive or false negative, would you consider to be more serious in this situation?  Explain your thinking.
