Question:

Hurricanes in the United States are given names. Since 1979 both male and female names have been used, alternating between names that are typically thought of as male and those typically thought of as female. The names are chosen well ahead of hurricane season.

a. According to an article published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2014, researchers Jung and colleagues claimed that hurricanes in the United States that were given male names caused significantly more deaths than hurricanes that were given female names. Based on this research, should all hurricanes be given female names so fewer deaths will occur? Explain.

b. The researchers also gave subjects a scenario, including a picture of a weather map that showed a hurricane approaching their area, and asked them how likely it was that they would evacuate. Half the subjects were randomly shown the map that included the name Christopher on the hurricane; the other half were shown an identical map, but the hurricane was named Christina. Those who saw the name Christopher were significantly more likely to say they would evacuate. Based on this research, does the name cause the different responses? Explain.
