Atlas Warehouse was equipped with an oldfashioned freight elevator that had a manually operated gate on each floor. When the elevator reached a floor, the employee had to raise the gate and then lower it after getting off. Lacey, a supervisor delivering a message to Ritter, stepped off the elevator after raising the gate. She did not lower the gate because she intended to get back on immediately. While she was talking with Ritter, the elevator was moved to another floor. After her conversation, Lacey returned to the elevator.
