Mary Weatherman was the personal secretary to the president of Hendricks County Rural Electric Membership Corporation. One of her friends at the firm was involved in an industrial accident that resulted in the loss of one of his arms. Shortly after the accident, he was dismissed. Mary, concerned about the plight of her friend, signed a petition seeking his reinstatement. Because of this conduct Mary also was discharged. Mary filed a charge with the NLRB alleging an unfair labor practice.
