According to a columnist in the Wall Street Journal, “The fact that smart, ambitious children who attend elite colleges also do well in life doesn’t mean the first caused the second.” Briefly discuss what evidence there is for this statement. If students don’t increase their earnings later in life by attending a highly selective college rather than a less selective college, why do they (and their parents) make so much effort to be admitted to a highly selective college?
