Question:

Dexter is taking 18 credit hours this semester, and he has 6 final exams on Monday. The first one starts at 8:00 a.m., and they run straight through until the last one is over at 8:00 p.m. It is 3:00 a.m. on Saturday morning and Dexter has not started studying yet. Right now, he has a C in every class. The following table gives Dexter’s expected final grades if he studies the appropriate amount of time.

If Dexter does not study for a class at all, then he will get a C. No other amounts of studying will give him a different grade than the above table indicates.

Dexter does not plan to sleep from now until the test begins, unless he can sleep for exactly 6 straight hours. If he does get the extra sleep, he projects that he will be able to have to study for Fin 416 only for 10 hours to get the A− (instead of studying for 30 hours). Dexter does plan to eat for a total of 2 hours and watch TV on Saturday night for a total of 1 more hour. He will devote the rest of the time to studying. Also, Dexter refuses to study more psychology unless he spends more time first studying philosophy. Furthermore, he refuses to study both anthropology and psychology. Each of these courses are three credit courses. Given his university’s GPA system (i.e. A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, etc.), formulate a binary integer program to determine the courses for which Dexter should study in order to end up with the highest possible GPA. Model this in Excel’s Solver to determine the solution. See problem 6–45 to learn how to use a binary variable to ensure that only one out of two constraints must be satisfied.
