Visit a local fast food restaurant that uses a Taylorist/Fordist form of work organization. Observe and make notes on the behaviour of its employees (‘crew members’), both those at the counter and those in the kitchen. Arrange to talk to one or two crew members – perhaps you already know someone who currently works there, or has done so in the past. Ask them about the best and worst aspects of that job. Relate their answers to the theories and research findings discussed in this chapter. Are the criticisms of McDonald’s and similar organizations unfair?
