3.1. Develop a QFD matrix for a household or personal item or product you use. Think of the possible customer and design requirements for this item. Complete the following:

a. The top level for the house of quality matrix for the item/product, including the interactions

(the hat on top of the house) and the competitive analysis (please name the competing products) in the matrix.

b. Show with arrows (up or down) what direction the new product specifications should take

(tighter or looser).

c. Develop the competitive analysis of similar products (please name the products). Shows how the competing products do not meet, meet, or exceed the design criteria (+/S/–).

Participants are encouraged to work in teams to have the full experience of communicating and deciding on the content of the QFD matrix. Some ideas for household items that you can participate in designing are given below. Please complete a QFD matrix for one product only from the list below or choose your own product to analyze:

a. A wallet or purse; some of the features you might consider are the size, the stitching, the material, number of credit cards holders, coin pocket, picture ID, etc.

b. A personal multitask printer (fax, copy, print, scan, speed, black and white or color, number of cartridges, control panel touch screen, print photos, etc.)

c. A high school calculator (functions, solar/batteries, clock, display size, aspect ratios, functions, touch display, etc.)
