Question:
1. As a leader, it's important to be comfortable enough to take calculated risks when making decisions. The entire field of leadership is full of risk-taking, whether it trusts a new employee to perform independent tasks, or making life-altering decisions for patients in a hospital. When i was a manager at dominos, making decisions was an important part of my role there. Whether it was directing delivery drivers to take the best deliveries, or instructing people to perform certain roles at certain times to improve efficiency, my decisions affected how long people had to wait to get their food, and how many deliveries each driver could take. As the shift leader, it was crucial for me to take these risks as needed.
2. I think that when most people think about the role of a director they imagine a general idea of what this person should look or act like. Personally i envision someone who is serious, business and results driven, not as easily accessible as your direct supervisor, and perhaps someone who not everyone would consider going to for the fear that you may be intruding. A new director recently promoted and took over my current district where i am employed. The first meeting that he introduced himself it was apparent that he was not a typical director. He was very personal, open, and not afraid to show emotion. I have not ever met someone with this amount of enthusiasm and emotion. What i appreciated from day one was that he did not hold anything back and wanted everyone to know who he genuinely was rather than attempting to fit a mold of what a director should be. This had led to better communication and overall fun throughout my district. The risk he took was being vulnerable to others and their perception. He took time to share successes and his own failures/opportunities leading up to where he is now. My takeaway is to not be afraid to showcase who you are and what sets you apart from the rest, challenge the status quo, and to be genuine.
