I feel there is no doubt that illegal immigrants are a problem that inhibits the ability to create an immigration policy that will work. Part of the country says that the immigrants are already here; let’s work to make them legal. Another part of the country says no, they are illegal and need to be sent back to where they came. With an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants ("Illegal Immigration, Population Estimates in the United States, 1969-2014 - Illegal Immigration Solutions, I personally, don’t see how you get rid of that many people, not quickly anyway. The book mentions Postville, Iowa, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided a slaughterhouse and detained 389 illegal workers. The effects of the raid devastated the town. An article in the Chicago Tribune points out that “Since the landmark raid, an economic squeeze has destroyed several local businesses. Postville's population has shrunk by nearly half, to about 1,800 residents, and townsfolk say a resulting anxiety -- felt from the deli to the schoolyard -- has been relentless”. Since the Hart-Cellar Act in 1965, the federal government has passed no less than 5 immigration reform acts, yet the illegal immigrant population keeps increasing. Mix that with the businesses that hire these illegal immigrants so they can pay the lower wages and you reach the problems we have today. When you consider that our government refuses to do anything but yell at each other, I have a hard time believing that anything will be done anytime soon.
