Question:
Read the following description and paraphrase it in your own words:
When Bell talks about the treadmill consumption he means that the more we produce the more we want. In a capitalistic society, which is one that we live in today profits are the only important things to producers. Without profits the whole capitalistic ideology falls apart. Our social desires for goods translate into consumption because we as a society today only find satisfaction in goods, the more money we make the more goods we buy. This sense of buying things as a sign of success or power is a very “Western” idea, the twist on Descartes “I Think therefore I am”, turning into “I buy Therefore I am” is truly the beliefs of most people in today’s society. Social status is a huge part of the idea of treadmill consumption, without people “one upping” each other with their possessions the hierarchy will fail. The entire concept of the leisure class that Veblen talks about will fail if not for treadmill consumption. Even though he goes on about two points describing one the better off we are the more leisure time we have, he also speculates that the more important environmental implication is, “The competitive and comparative character of conspicuous consumption, leisure, and waste”.
