A perfect example of an ethical business decision made by the firm i worked for was when the company did a voluntary recall on thousands and thousands of medical implants. The company is one of the top manufacturers of medical implants such as knee and hip replacements and when quality testing showed that a batch of the product that was already on hospital shelves and in operating rooms did not test as it should have, the company did a voluntary recall of the product even when the FDA did not require them to do so. They knew that it was the right thing to do and although they took a huge financial hit for it and put a smudge on their good name and reputation, they remained honest and ethical and ultimately that is what creates customer loyalty. It did take a while for them to rebuild that trust with their customers but it is a hurdle they overcame and because they took the honest approach, customers (surgeons, physicians, hospitals, etc.) now have deep trust with the company because they are confident in their ability to do the right thing.
