The relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union was strained in the years following World War II. In an effort to keep the Soviets from spreading communism the United States adopted the containment policy where they would assist other nations to keep communism and especially the Soviets out. The Soviet Union had invaded Korea in 1945 taking it away from the control of Japan. To keep the Soviets from taking complete control the United States moved troops in to the Southern part of Korea. The territory was divided along the 38th parallel with the Soviets controlling the North and South Kore under the watch of the United States. Unsurprisingly this caused two different government structures. North Korea was led by Communist leader Kim II Sung and was backed by the Soviet Union and China. South Korea took a democratic approach led by Syngman Rhee and was supported by the United States. On June 25th, 1950, soldiers from North Korea crossed the 38th parallel to invade South Korea. Kim II Sung was looking to unite the peninsula and thought the invasion would cause an uprising among the people in South Korea. He also mistakenly thought the United States did not have much interest in South Korea and would not intervene. The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution that condemned the actions of North Korea as a “breach of peace” and enacted sanctions against them. They also voted to send troops to stop the advance of North Korea. Although the Soviet Union is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and has veto power, they did not have a delegate present for the vote because they were protesting the United Nations denial of seating a delegate from China. General Douglas MacArthur was put in charge of the UN forces as the United States plus 15 other nations sent troops to stop North Korea.
