Violence among American communities has gained more attention over the years. However, according to the FBI annual report (2017) reports of rape, homicides, and violent crimes have decreased over the course of the last two decades. The thought process behind the polls where Americans feel like violence is increasing is thought to be due to the numbers of mass killings over the last several years. Although strategies such as gun control are being laid down to combat the extent of violence in American communities, it is deemed that violence will not disappear since it’s in the nature of the American society (Suomi et al., 2018).
I believe violence and human abuse are being fostered in communities mostly by factors such as socio-economic status, race, lack of education, exposure to violent movies, video games, and music. There is also a since of entitlement growing in our communities. Also, a lack of value systems is amplified by the frequent violence seen in everything we experience and continues to instill violence as acceptable.
Children are often targets and exposed to a abuse situations due to their inability to protect themselves. Indicators of child abuse can be divided into two categories; that is behavioral indicators and physical indicators. Behavioral indicators refer to a child’s emotions, actions or attitudes (Tracy, 2018). On the other hand, physical indicators relate to the injuries a child can suffer from abuse.
Child abuse can be differentiated into four general categories. Let’s begin with physical child abuse. This form of abuse is as a result of physical aggression. Secondly, we have child sexual abuse. This form of abuse involves any act of sexual activity including incest, rape or intercourse between an adult and a child. Thirdly, we have emotional child abuse. This form of abuse involves any behavior or attitude that may interfere with social development or mental development of a child. Lastly, we have child neglect. This is the most common form of child abuse. It can be described as the failure of providing the necessities to a child.
Abuse against female partners can include elements such as physical abuse, threats, cruel words, emotional abuse or forced sex (Gelles, 2017). Elder abuse may encompass physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, neglect or financial exploitation (Varley, & Western, 2018). In about 90% of the cases reported of elder abuse, perpetrators of the abuse have always been the family members and caregivers. Most of the elderly people choose to suffer in silence due to fear of being victimized more by their abusers if they complain.
Nurses are expected to provide quality care using compassion and respect to people who might have been abused. Nurses have an ethical expectation to identify and report any abuse situations. Nurses should also be able to provide emotional support to their patients and provide referrals and resources to help their patients cope with any identified abuse situations.
