Research the topic “a movement to prioritize the human capacity for reason as the highest form of human attainment.” Enlightenment philosophers believed that through reason, human beings could perfect themselves, their society, their government, and their world in general. Although it first took shape in Europe, the Enlightenment eventually became a powerful force in North America also. Some point to the Enlightenment as the reason for the waning influence of religion in many people’s lives. Ever since then, they argue, people have placed more stock in what science—as well as other products of reason and the human intellect—tells them than what religion teaches. And that is why our society has become so morally depraved, they contend. What do you think? Do you agree with this assessment?
