Question:
Write a paper about the ancestors of today’s Native Americans, who arrived in the Americas between 10,000-15,000 years ago. Even though we don’t know exactly when these ”Paleo-Indians” got here, this much is clear: they got here way before anyone else did. This, then, leads us to our discussion question. Is it right to continue claiming that Christopher Columbus discovered America? After all, the “Paleo-Indians” were here thousands of years before he was even born. Furthermore, as we’ll also see in the next chapter, he wasn’t even the first white man to reach the Americas.
As archeological studies have recently revealed, a group of Viking explorers led by Leif Ericson made it to Greenland (and possibly Massachusetts) around the year 1000 A.D., about five hundred years before Columbus’s famous voyages. At the very least, Columbus, an Italian navigator who was sailing on behalf of Spain, accomplished this—he discovered America on behalf of the Spanish, the first white men to establish permanent settlements on this part of the world, a feat the Vikings were unable to accomplish. But is this enough to continue giving Columbus such a lofty status in our history books? What do you think? Explain.
