Become a sociolinguist and to consider a common, everyday form of communication. You should pick something you hear every day: greetings, a "sign off" or "good bye," or saying "thanks" (you could also pick some other form, for example, 'introductions'--but these are not necessarily everyday occurrences, so pick wisely).

Pick one form to consider, ideally, over a three day period. How we greet, thank or say farewell to one another often says something about the relationship we have (or would like to have) with someone. As we move through our day, we move between speech communities and this paper will help you think about when and why we say what we say or even communicate through other non-verbal cues depending on with whom we are interacting.
