Abstraction Phase

In the abstraction phase, teams use a variety of techniques to represent alternate architectures for the SoS challenge. Targeting support for the implementation phase, key elements of this deliverable include the abstraction of component systems, their organization/interdependence, degrees of control, and the specific hypothesis (es) that guide the specific modeling approach to be implemented.

Procedure

Abstract, for Hierarchy and Interaction descriptions: These are the keys for executing this phase. Probe deeply your Definition Phase products AND your original selected work to proceed to a successful Abstraction Phase, culminating in hypotheses.

Your report MUST contain these, and ONLY these, four sections; use the exact words below as section titles. Your text must logically relate each section to the next, not separate disconnected products.

  1. Abstraction Representation- Present and discuss your "abstraction depiction", i.e., a kind of "paper model". Ensure that the most important ROPE table elements are evident along with some indication of their key behaviors/interests/constraints that drive the SoS dynamics as well as drivers, disruptors, and, perhaps most importantly, their interdependencies in networks.
  2. SoS Design Variables (DVs)- Considering your Abstraction Representation and your Research Questions, describe your most relevant SoS DVs and clearly indicate to which of the three classes they belong (Composition, Configuration, Control). In other words, characterize systems that may compose the SoS, their possible configuration with interdependencies expressed, and the key variables that may distinguish alternate SoS architectures in terms of independence/control in your setting.
  3. Candidate Performance Metrics and Hypotheses- Develop and describe a list of candidate metrics to evaluate alternatives. These metrics will be manifest as measurable quantities in your computer model/simulation. Also, provide a preliminary hypothesis(es) (building from your RQ) using some of these metrics and the most pertinent SoS DVs. Make sure it is clear how your hypotheses can be tested in the Implementation Phase model you intend to build.
  4. Modeling Approach- Specify and describe the modeling and analysis approach you intend to take. While making decisions on the modeling and analysis approach, bear in mind two facts: 1) your approach may involve a hybrid or combination of approaches discussed in class, on Solberg chart, or elsewhere with permission, 2) there will be a chance to change your mind on the modeling approach after digesting all the options and the pros/cons.
