Connection Blunders The Algerian newspaper Al-fadjr reported that customers of Algerian Telecom were complaining about the continuing scarcity of modems to link computers to the Internet, despite confirmation by the company's CEO that such devices were readily available to everybody. The newspaper recorded many customer complaints indicating long wait times for their computers to be connected because of the delay in receiving needed modems. It appeared that there was a lack of supply of modems, imported from outside Algeria, causing delays in responding to customers' requests. In addition, customers complained about the high prices of Internet subscriptions and connection speeds. In a telephone interview, the company's CEO, Musa Bin Hammadi, indicated that the prices would stay the same but that modems would be supplied free to customers after a mandatory subscription period of six months. A few months earlier, the head of marketing strategy in the company, Faisal Bsah, indicated that 320,000 modems had been purchased by the company to solve the connection problems once and for all. He assured customers that problems of modem scarcity would be solved shortly: "sixty thousand modems are found in the company's warehouses, twenty thousand more are expected to be received through Algeria airport. In addition about 300,000 are found in Algeria seaport." One of the customers, commenting on the CEO's earlier statement about the availability of modems, angrily noted in an Internet blog: "I believe this [company] official doesn't know what he is talking about... I personally was only able to get a modem after much hard work and I know lots of individuals who haven't received their modems despite the fact that they applied several months ago ... so where is the truth
