Eastern Cape receives boost as WW plant to be converted into $4000-$bed field hospital News $24$ by: Malibongwe Dayimani

The Eastern Cape Government has received a major boost in its effort to fight the Covid$-19$ pandemic after the German government and Volkswagen $($M$)$ pledged R$107$ million for the corstruction of a field hospital at an unused plant in Port Elizabeth. The $4000-$bed facility will be made possible after Volkswagen SA $($MWSA$)$ agreed to convert its $66000m^3$ Korsten plant into a lempenary field hospital. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development donated $5\mathrm{.}2$ million, while WW pledged R$28$ million. The initiative was announced on Tuesday by WWA Chairman and Managing Director, Thomas Scheifer and Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane.

Operations at the hospital will be managed by the Eastern Cape Department of Health in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. The plant in Neave, Korsten, which is currently not in use, would be corverted and used as an overnlow medical facility, said W spokesperson, Andile Dlamini. He added the facility was set to be completed in phases and handed over to the Government as the need for medical care in the Metro developed. The preparation of the frst phase is currently ongoing and will take approximately six to eight weeks to be completed. This process would equip the medical fachify to accommodate up to $1484$ patients, said Dlamini. The temporary plant will be made available to the Government umil March $2021.$ He added the initiative vers aimed at assisting the local and provinciol government to provide much$-$needed care to Covid$-19$ patients in Nelsor Mandela Bay.

"Once fully operational, the faclity couid accommodate up $104000$ beds for patients diagnosed with Covid$-19.$ This would also include high$-$acuily patients who require oxypenation. Dlamini said the planned corvers on of the building was the result of coliaboration between VWSA, the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, Municipality. and Health Department. Whas also been working on the manufacture of ventilators, respirators and masks in partnership with other local businesses, and has offered ongoing support to the business chamber and municipaity

"Soliclarity is crucial in a criss $-$ and Covid$-19$ is an unprecedented plotal threas," said Thonas Schaeter, the Chairman and Managing Drector of WWSA "Through collaboration, We will be able to achieve the postion of strength wo will need to fight Covid$-19.$ This will ease the burden on the existing $1000-$bed field hosp ital as the Netscn Mandela Bay Stadum, where Covid$-19$ patients are currenty being quarantined.
