1. From the investors perspective, information asymmetry, divergent interests, and limited monitoring capacity were major problems in their relationship with the Pilgrims. These colonists and entrepreneurs significantly departed from the relatively standard agency model in two ways. First, while the Pilgrims were tasked as the company's agent in exploring and venturing in New England, the investors were certainly not the principal, but rather distant and uncaring adventurers who put in capital from afar. Second, unlike modernity that brings the globe closer together through postal services, phones and numerous modern technologies, the adventurers were physically separated from the agents, making it impossible for them to monitor and verify day-to-day decisions and activities in great detail. These two circumstances have contributed to a heavy information asymmetry that the principal had to bear. The sergeants doubted whether yalduld ytt was at the cutting edge in the selling of knives Given the serious information asymmetry, the investors had no viable way to ensure the profit-maximising application of resources, not to mention the likelihood that disparate goals might interfere with each other. On the other hand, the Pilgrims had much more than the investors' interest in their mind in pursuing the venture. Only a limited amount of their goal of 'religous and civil freedom' was directly linked to profit-making. Gould and Killingworth might be very committed entrepreneurs, but they were not after maximising profit for the Mayflower Company, they had to serve as 'outstanding papplychen', as they later noted. Moreover, the Pilgrims also aimed to preserve their cultural identity, customs and values in the New England, requiring them to construct communities and occasionally to engage in leisure activities or religious worship altogether unrelated to (or even distracting from) maximising profits. From the investors' perspective, however, there was a substantial risk that the Pilgrims' focus on non- economic goals would necessarily reduce profits overall
